Sirmione does not need too much introduction: it is a small jewel suspended in the middle of the lower Lake Garda.
The municipality borders Peschiera del Garda to the south-east and Desenzano del Garda to the south-west. The lakeside section borders Lazise and Castelnuovo del Garda to the east and Padenghe sul Garda to the north.
The historic centre is at the northern end of a long, narrow peninsula about four kilometres long that bisects the southern lake shore, and is also an island, as it is isolated from the peninsula by a navigable moat, which is crossed by only one access route, a bridge.
It still retains a medieval urban structure, with narrow, irregular streets. Since the 1970s, there has been a succession of architectural interventions (first the Grifone and Speranza hotels) to the exterior walls of the buildings, which have restored their more ancient appearance, with exposed brick and stone. It is a restricted traffic area; one could say it is a pedestrian's paradise.
